As God gives directions and “God” ideas come into play, there is a Word that we should all be mindful of. That is – beware of the dangers of popularity.
It is no doubt that everyone wants to be popular and there is nothing wrong with being popular, but Ray Stedman, the author of “The Servant Who Rules” presents three (3) false forces that drive popularity and we must be watchful for them lest we become distracted. The first (1) false force is: Misguided expectations and emphases (Mk 3:9-10), second (2) – The Rise of Unclean Spirits (Mk 3:11) and third (3), Misunderstanding on All Sides (Mk 3:20-22).
Listen to this, my friends - “Popularity is empty and meaningless; celebrity status is dangerous and can even hinder our mission. Fame quickly gives rise to dangerous forces that will destroy us if we do not rely on God’s power from moment to moment, just as Jesus did. Amid the noise of the crowd, we must continually listen to that still, small voice of the Spirit of God (Stedman, 2002).
